Chapter Nine

For a long while Dane dozed, not realizing he was actually falling asleep.

He woke to hushed darkness. His left arm was numb where Kai lay on it. He pulled away gently, not wanting to disturb him. Kai moved with a soft shush of skin against the comforter but did not wake. His breathing remained slow and even.

Dane got up, looking down at his naked lover, realizing the room had gotten slightly chilled. He took the edge of the comforter that dragged the floor and folded it over Kai.

He found his way to the shadowed bathroom, which was some kind of shrine to bodily functions with a toilet like a throne and a shower of natural rock with five large spigots that could easily produce a waterfall.

When Dane found his way back to the bedroom, Kai was sitting up in bed, a frozen silhouette, the comforter making white waves about his waist.

“Where’d you go?” he asked.

Dane pressed his bare knees against the side of the bed, looking down at him. “I had to pee.”

“I thought—I thought—“

Dane frowned. Kai was shaking.

Dane tried not to wonder about too many things at once, like what in the hell was going to happen after tonight.

“Hey. I didn’t leave. I wouldn’t do that to you right now. I didn’t do that even when you tossed me out.”

“I’m still not sure I understand why.” Kai was looking at his lap. Dane saw in the dimness his fingers clench and unclench.

Second thoughts?

Dane shivered and knelt on the bed before him, boldly gathering him into his arms. “You’re not sure? After—after what we did?”

Kai shook his head and did not embrace him in return.

Dane pressed his lips to his forehead, still and chaste, brushing the pale hair back from his face. “Seriously?”

He felt Kai’s chest expand as he took a deep breath.

“Then,” Dane said, “I guess I need to up my game.”

One of Kai’s arms came up to touch his naked waist. “Do what?”

“Try harder. Do better.”

“You want to do this again?” Kai asked.

Did Kai mean now, or after tonight? Covering both prospects, he answered. “I said I want that, didn’t I?”

Vague shapes surrounded them in their midnight forms. Shades of curtains, bureau shadows, a leather chair. If Dane concentrated hard enough, he could hear the whisper-soft hum of the computer in the alcove. There was a waver on the air as Kai shifted in his arms, cheek still pressed to the top of Dane’s shoulder. Kai’s hair smelled of October.

“I never thought—“ Kai began.

Dane could hear the hurt in that tone and felt somehow responsible. “Kai. Kai, I see you.”

Kai nodded against him.

“Kai, I see you. And you’re beautiful.”

“Then stay.”

“Okay.”

“And definitely up your game.”

Dane winced. He couldn’t tell from Kai’s tone if he was being sarcastic or critical. He would not take it to heart. He had heard the man cry out in ecstasy only a short time ago. He’d done everything right.

He placed his hand under Kai’s chin and tilted his head up, kissing him. When Dane pulled back, Kai was breathless.
